Maaka Squier - Canadian Fiber artist
Fiber artist Maaka Squier grew up in the beautiful coastal region of British Columbia...

"My mother was a horticulturalist and gifted at embroidery, which she taught me at an early age. I spent many happy childhood hours exploring the realms of imagination in the magical gardens that she and my father created. I developed a love for flowers and gardening and a deep connection to nature. This, and my ever-present sense of awe at the beauty of Creation are the inspirations for my fiber art work.

I have a passion for expressing the exquisite textures, subtleties and colors of nature and imbuing each piece with a spiritual light... illuminating the natural world in a way reminiscent of the soft images of Heaven that I have glimpsed through the mists of my mind.

Each tapestry is a labor of Love, created through many hours of intense and detailed work in a mixed-media of fiber art techniques. A background of over 30 years in many genres of the arts including watercolor, colored pencil, pastel, mixed-media and encaustic guides me in the composition, form and color harmonies, while the fiber art medium allows me the freedom to create texture and 3-dimensional relief beyond what I could achieve in a painting.

Hand-dyed silks, felted wool, mohair 'locks', hand and machine embroidery/'thread-painting', silk ribbon embroidery, 'needle-lace', and beadwork are some of the materials and techniques I use in the creation of my richly embellished fiber art tapestries."
